33 Days!!!
Great weather here in VT, it was sunny and at least 50F yesterday. I went for my first outside run of the year (about 3 miles), and it was glorious. Sun shining, birds singing, me dying (just kidding). It was great to get outside, now I can't wait to get the bike out. 2 of our local bike shops are having beginning of the season sales this week, and both myself and JG are in the market for new bikes. I'm really looking forward to a bike with suspension, the old GT was a great bike, but it nearly killed me last year (and I returned the favor by just about killing it), and it's time for a new one. WOO HOO!!
In other news, it was also a great weekend. JH and I summited Mansfield (finally) on Saturday, and while it was cloudy and socked it, we had a blast. We went via the Long Trail from Stowe, and picked up the Profanity Trail at Taft lodge. Steep, but very climbable with crampon-equipped snowshoes. Plenty of snow left up there, that for sure. And, after summitting we took off the shoes and proceeded to slide on our behinds just about all the way down the mountain. We sure got some funny looks as we blasted down the mogul fields on Chin Clip trail (at Stowe Ski area). Well, that's all for now, more to come on the bike shopping shortly...

Team Runs with Scissors
PRINGLES HELP ME FOCUS
The hardest part of an increasingly aggressive training schedule for me, aside from just making time to get it done, is adjusting my diet and managing my energy levels throughout the entire day. At the end of the day today I crashed--it was the usual ugly mess...Just didn't have any juice to go to the gym to run and lift....ughh...now I regret it...
Hmmm, what could I do...laundry? Uh, no. Dishes? Already done. Take out the trash? OK...
(Back after these messages)
Moments ago, I not only took out the trash I also ate a half sleeve of Girl Scout cookies, a bowl of peanuts (unsalted) and a bunch of Lays patato chips (heavily salted). This is why I should have went to the gym!
Now that the guilt has passed (I pledged to run a little longer tomorrow), it reminds me how much I love Pringles and beef jerky when racing or out on the trail for extended periods of time. Of course, they're in addition to the energy bars and gels...but there's nothing like a bunch of Pringles 7 hours into a 12 hour race!
The good news is I resisted the half-keg of homebrew (American Brown Ale) in the closet. Turtle and I pledged to be "dry" until the race. Crazy? Probably.
But our schedule this year is very ambitious and my personal goal is to get to the starting line for all of them in the best phyiscal condition of my life--and then finish them all.
When you get right down to it, it's all about focus. Maybe I need to craft a more specific training schedule to help me focus, and then stick to it...I'll have to think about that.
Well, got to go, it's almost time for dinner!
Maybe I should ride my bike to work on Friday?

39 Days!!
Well, you'll note a change to the schedule on the right. Looks as though ARU (Adventure Racing Unleashed) has joined forces with GMARA (Green Mountain Adventure Racing Association) to put on the Bitter Pill Adventure Race (12 hr) in Bolton on August 12. Since this is in our backyard, we'll probably forgo the Jeep Series race in CT we had been planning on. It also makes me wonder if the PPBS, which ARU normally runs in September, will take place. As replacements, we are considering doing the other 2 races in the New England Adventure Race Series (we are doing the 12 hr VT race in July). This would give us a 6 hr Urban race in June in Maine and a 24 hour race in September in NH.
More to come on the schedule in the coming days, but for now, it is training and planning for the first race of the season. This weekend I'm hoping to do an all day hike up on Mansfield, where we can hopefully make the summit this time. I'd like to follow the summit up with some off trail bushwhacking/navigating, something we could definitely use some practice it. I think we are at the point now where we need to start getting out at least once per week to do some big outdoor training activities. The fun has begun!!

Team Runs with Scissors
40 DAYS!
We're 40 days from our first race of the year and training continues. We did pause momentarily--well, more like for 36 hrs--to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Waterbury. Justin took some pictures so we should be able to post a few.
In the mean time, we're hoping to get on our bikes this week. That has been particularly challenging because of the recent cold spell. The boys at www.bestskiweather.com are forecasting below average temperatures and above average snowfall for much of March and April. Who knows, maybe we'll end up with a pro-longed ski season? That would be kind of cool, but it would also complicate training for paddling and biking.
Speaking of ski season, the photos posted above are from a winter hike in mid-February (I think). We went from Route 108 in Stowe to Sterling Pond on Friday and from Sterling Pond, up Madonna Mountain via the steepest fricking ski trail we could find and down to Beavor Meadow Lodge on Saturday. On Sunday we hike out and finished, as is our tradition, with a few beers at Waterbury Wings.

Well, 45 days by my count til the first race of the season, and we're all getting into the training spirit. Here's a picture of JH and I hiking Mansfield last weekend. We set out from Stowe on the Long Trail, and got almost to the top before being turned back by ice. We had no crampons, and couldn't make the last couple feet. This picture was taken just below the highest point we reached. We had a blast on this hike, and spent most of the trip down the mountain on our behinds, sliding down some pretty steep trails. Great time! Of course, JG was enjoying pints of Guinness at the Inn At Long Trail the same day, that @%$&%$!!! Anyway, it's great to get out of the gym and start exercising outside. I think we'll be on bikes (on the road anyway) by next week, even if it is cold. Woo Hoo!!

Team Runs with Scissors
KEEP WINTER COOL
All right, check this out. We all know that this has been one of the strangest winters on record. These folks at Keep Winter Cool have a righteous campaign going to encourage all of us who love winter sports and recreation to do our part to keep winters cool.
Among other important observations, our friends note that "Global warming is a real threat to our environment and our economy, and a big concern for more than 11.5 million U.S. skiers and snowboarders. It’s also a bottom line issue for the $3 billion ski area industry, and tens of thousands of employees who count on dependable winters for a living." I couldn't agree more.
As outdoor athletes--and lovers of all things out-of-doors--Team Runs with Scissors thinks we have a special responsibility to preserve, protect and improve the environment.
This is a pretty nifty campaign--please check it out--and help the world chill out!

All-
Here is the long awaited Team Runs With Scissors adventure race schedule for the 2006 season. We are charting a pretty ambitious course of 7 races, bookending the season with a pair of 6 hour races (courtesy of GOALA ARA, who put on a good, well organized race). After the first 6 hour race we'll be competing in 4 12 hour races, building up to the Ultimate 36 hour race in October. That should be quite a challenge, as it will be 3 times longer than anything else we've done. And without further ado, here it is:
RWS 2006 Race Schedule
April 30: Savage 6 hr Adventure Race, Hibernia Park, Chester County, PA
June: ARU's Bitter Pill 12 hr, Bolton, VT
July 16: New England Adventure Race Series 12 hr, Mt Snow, VT
August 12: Jeep Adventure Race Series 12 hr, Cornwall Bridge, CT
Sept: ARU's PPBS 12 hr, Smuggler's Notch
Oct 6: Ultimate 36 hr race, North Creek, NY
Oct 30: The Edge 6 hr race, Southeastern PA
Throughout the season we'll also likely be participating in other short local races, such as RunVermont's Urban Adventure, as well as weekly mountain bike races at the Catamount Family Center in Williston VT and Onion River Sports weekly mountain bike series in Montpelier.
Look for more updates coming soon, we have all been training separately over the winter, but now it's time to really get back on our horses and start training hard together...

Team Runs with Scissors
We're less than 8 weeks out from our first race. Graham will be posting the official team schedule soon.
Training has kicked into high gear and we're all looking forward to some racing. I have to admit, however, that I'm a little bit concerned about training on the bike...it's still snowy and cold here in northern Vermont...there might be some below zero road rides on the mountain bike in our future.
